The bowl cut is back, and one popular actress is unrecognizable because of it

Bowl cuts are back, but with a royal twist.

The Crown’s Claire Foy is proving that she’s more than just a fictional queen with her latest haircut. The actress showed off a fresh bowl cut while shopping in London last week.

Foy has changed her hair quite a few times — last year it was a dark pixie cut, and in her new movie, Unsane, she has a strawberry blond lob — but this look makes her the most unrecognizable. We’re used to seeing the woman who plays England’s queen with a bit more of a feminine ’do. And we love her for going against the grain on this one.

In the ’80s and ’90s, most little boys had this haircut at one point in their childhood — all it took was a mom on a mission and a bowl. But it’s been revived recently, and we’re guessing the bowl — or male gender — is no longer necessary.

Philip Lim ignited the style’s resurrection during Fall 2009 New York Fashion Week, when all his models rocked the look. Kim Kardashian tried it on for size on the cover of YRB Magazine the same year. Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys were responsible for bringing the bowl cut back to the red carpet in 2009 and 2013, respectively.

More recently, Rihanna‘s rocked the mop, as has Ruby Rose, Agyness Deyn, and Zendaya. Gucci model Peyton Knight debuted a longer bowl cut in 2015, and some say that edgy and unique look kickstarted her career. Just a few months ago, models in the Marc Jacobs Fall 2018 runway show donned rainbow bowl cuts.

So Foy is in good, stylish company. It’s definitely a go-to for any hipster, and while it’s hard to believe Foy, who is so regal onscreen, is anything but classic, her Converse and distressed jeans complete the look.

Don’t believe it’s back for good? Singer Gus Dapperton, who’s become famous for his tiny bowl cut, and his gaggle of bowl-cut-clad lookalikes could convince you otherwise in his newest music video.
