The Daily Meal Chris Hemsworth Eats to Stay in Shape

Chris Hemsworth

It's no secret the lengths at which some actors will go through to prepare for a role. We’ve all seen method actors like Christian Bale and Robert De Niro transform themselves into character, effectively blurring the line for viewers as to what is real and what is not. And over the years, as health trends have evolved, the methods used to either drop weight or put on a superhero's mass of muscle have changed drastically, although some actors will still take risks for the right roles.

Chris Hemsworth, for example, is known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which his naturally large stature lends perfectly to the character he plays. And even though Hemsworth has historically had a great physique, he still has to put in a lot of ground work in order to be in the right shape for his blockbuster roles.

While speaking with news.com.au, Hemsworth’s private chef, Sergio Perera, detailed exactly what the 40-year-old star eats and how each meal is adjusted depending on whether he needs to bulk up or lose weight for a role.

“Obviously the guy is a big boy,” Perera stated, revealing that Hemsworth “requires a lot of protein for the body he has.” And when it comes to the latter, Perera told the publication that one of the actors favorite foods includes “good quality beef.”

“When it comes to building muscle, he just keeps it very clean with a lot of barbecuing — like meats and vegetables — and keeping it Mediterranean, which involves a lot of olive oil,” the former MasterChef Australia contestant added. With Hemsworth’s diet being completely boxed or canned food free, Perera added that he would regularly make one specific meal for the famous Thor star.

“One thing I did religiously with him, was every single day he would have one very large, hearty salad that consisted of raw and cooked vegetables, fermented products, nuts, seeds and a lot of good fats with a piece of steak or a big piece of fish.”

Hemsworth’s wife, Elsa Pataky, is who originally linked Perera with the larger than life actor. “He had just finished the first Thor movie, and he needed someone to help match his meal plan to his physical demands,” Perera recalled. “That's how I came on board. I would sit with his trainer, who is one of his closest friends, and we would all work together on figuring out Chris’ goals,” the chef continued.

As it seems, having a solid team around you while preparing for major Hollywood roles is almost as necessary as the diet that will get you there. And while we don’t all have access to the best private chefs in the industry, Hemsworth’s dedication to his craft is still something to be admired and looked to for inspiration. Don’t we all wish we could pick up Thor’s hammer with ease?
