Did Justin Bieber Make Selena Gomez Quit Instagram For Good?
For someone who is the most followed person on Instagram, Selena Gomez is pretty chill about the social media app. Yes, she posted some fun pics of her summer over the past few weeks, but for the most part, she stays pretty tight-lipped about her personal life. Compare this to the 6th most followed user, Kylie Jenner, who shares literally every second of her life with us (not that we're complaining).
In an interview with Elle, Selena described her secretive behavior. It's no surprise that the star, who has been in the spotlight since she was really young, is over the onslaught of public feedback that comes with fame in a social media world.
So, to get all those voices out of her head, she simply ditched. "I’m not on the internet,” she said. “I haven’t been on the internet in months." In fact, the singer doesn't even have her own Instagram password. "I have no apps on my phone, no photo editing apps. I have Peak, a brain game."
While we don't know exactly when she deleted the app, we wouldn't be surprised if it coincided with her ex, Justin Bieber's, engagement to Hailey Baldwin. The news definitely sparked a lot of comments on social media and the internet in general, focusing on her reaction and response. It would have been a fitting time to delete the app in an attempt to avoid the mayhem.
So, you might be wondering, how does Selena post all those pics of her hanging with her friends and getting tattooed without knowing her password? The answer is simple. She gave one of her friends access to the account and sometimes will post from her pal's phone. Because you can't completely ditch Instagram, right? I mean, how else are you supposed to show your ex that you're living your best life as he parades his girlfriend all around the country (and Canada)?
“The reason why is, it’s not real to me,” Selena said, explaining her reasoning behind the decision to delete Instagram off her phone. “I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective. As far as my personal life, someone sees me having a glass of wine? I could give two shits. I’m not trying to hide. That’s my life. I’m living it the way I want to live it. But it’s about making a conscious effort-if I can have a moment to be with my friends, I’ll take that time. So I don’t have any of it. I had to make that decision.”
Fans saw her thought process in making this decision last month when she posted a photo with a caption letting people know that her life is not what Instagram makes it out to be.
"I had something I’ve thought about for a while that I want to share," she wrote on the post. "This page is my highlights and a few low lights. I post what I am willing to share with you guys. I hear people say all the time that they wish they had someone else’s life based on a few pictures.. we all do it. But this is me sharing some happy moments with you guys. Trust me, my life isn’t always this filtered and flowery... We are all on our own journey."
We're glad you're finding peace with social media, Sel! As long as you promise to never stop providing us with such great content.
