Director Glenn Weiss Just Proposed to His Girlfriend After Winning an Emmy Award
The 70th annual Emmy Awards were pretty standard for most of Monday night - corny jokes, win, speech, win, speech, commercial break, and so on. Until director Glenn Weiss delivered the most shocking moment of the night by proposing to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen in front of the entire audience on live television after his win for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special.
When Weiss went up on stage he first thanked his daughters and paid a special tribute to his mother who passed away two weeks ago. But when he directed his speech at Svendsen, Weiss said, "You wonder why i don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because i want to call you my wife."
The crowd erupted into cheers as Svendsen looked shocked and made her way to the stage so Weiss could get down on one knee.
And it appears that the director's decision to pop the question was not spur of the moment because he brought an engagement ring - the same one his dad used to propose to his mom 67 years ago. Awwww.
Here is a transcript of his full acceptance speech (including the proposal!):
"Thanks to my daughters, Sydney and Taylor. I love you girls more than you will ever know. I want to thank Jen Todd, Mike Di Luca, all of our friends at ABC. I'm really grateful to be here, but it's bittersweet. The person most proud at this moment would be my mom and she passed away just two weeks ago. Part of my heart is broken. I don't think it will ever be repaired, but she's in me and she always will be. Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life and mom was right. Don't ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because i want to call you my wife.
I didn't ask yet. I didn't ask yet. I'm going to be a moment. This is the ring that my dad put on my mom's finger 67 years ago. And to my sisters and brothers, I didn't swipe it, dad knows I have it, okay? Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?
Thank you to the academy! Thank you, everybody."
Weiss was nominated for his directorial work on The Oscars, and turns out he really does know what makes for a good award show moment.
