Dramatic body camera footage reveals moment Texas police save suicidal woman from drowning
A Texas police officer is being called a hero after footage was released showing him saving an unidentified woman from drowning on Sept. 17.
The video, which was released by the Arlington Police Department, reveals the moment Officer Aaron Cooper pulled the 20-year-old woman, who police said tried to drown herself, from Lake Arlington.
A body camera captured the dramatic rescue. In it, a female officer can be seen running towards the lake yelling, “You got her?”
“Yeah,” Cooper shouts back from the water.
Cooper later emerges from the water with the woman, and the female officer helps carry her to the shore, saying sympathetically, “Come on, honey.” Another officer can be heard saying she’s “conscious and breathing.”
According to police, Cooper was responding to a welfare call about the woman. When he showed up to her residence, he discovered she was missing, and eventually determined she had headed for the lake.
Cooper spotted the woman struggling in the water, and removed his gun belt, vest and shirt to wade into the water and retrieve her. She was taken to a nearby hospital, and later brought to a mental health clinic.
The woman is reportedly doing fine, and had even posted to social media to thank Cooper for saving her life. Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson tweeted about the incident, tagging his tweet #TrueHeroism.
