Some go to their loyal nail technician every week, and others apply a fresh coat while watching Hallmark movies on the couch. Each are worthy techniques, but an at-home application is certainly more accident-prone.

Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than spilling your favorite shade of pink on your pearl white carpet, plush couch, or comfy sweats. We take that back, spilling a glass of red wine is equally bad. How To Remove Polish From Clothing (Acetone Method)

First and foremost, see if the fabric contains acetate, triacetate, or modacrylic. If it does then do NOT use acetone, because it will bleach the surface. If you're in the clear, proceed.

1. Grab acetone, a cotton ball, paper towels, and a flat surface.

2. Take the stained fabric and lay it down on the flat surface on top of paper towels. Carefully take your cotton ball and blot or dab the area (do not smear) with acetone. The stain will transfer to the paper towel.

3. Repeat the acetone action with a clean cotton ball and paper towel. If the stain is stubborn or if there are any traces of polish left, throw it in the washer under cool water.

How To Remove Polish From Furniture (Acetone-Free Method)

Removing a nail polish stain from upholstery is a little bit trickier, but entirely possible. This method is acetone-free. No discoloration or bleach here.

1. Immediately use a clean paper towel to absorb as much polish as possible. Make sure to not smear the polish across more of the surface. Use small sweeps or a blotting action.

2. Run a clean cloth under cool water and add a tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Blot or dab the stained surface with the soap-covered cloth. Repeat steps if necessary.

3. When the stain disappears, blot the surface with a clean cloth and cool water.

How To Remove Nail Polish From Carpet

All it takes is a little elbow grease to get your carpet back to new. You will need paper towels, clean cloths, and non-acetone nail polish remover.

1. Immediately use paper towels or a clean cloth to absorb as much of the spill as you can. Do NOT rub, but blot the area to ensure that the stain doesn't spread.

2. Grab non-acetone nail polish remover and pour a small amount on a clean cloth. Carefully blot the stained area.

3. Repeat process until the stain is removed.

Some absolute DON’TS:

• Don’t use hot water. The fabric could change its form, resulting in deepening the bond between the stain and fabric.

• Don’t smear the stain. Blot, dab, or use swift short circling motions. If you rub or smear the stain, it has the potential to spread onto more of the fabric.

• Don’t start blotting in the middle. Work from the outside of the stain into the middle.
