Elton John is an EGOT winner
Elton John has just made awards season history!
At the 75th Annual Emmy Awards on Monday night, legendary singer-songwriter Elton John became pop culture history's latest EGOT winner!
John won an Emmy as an Executive Producer/Performer for his live concert special Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium in the category Outstanding Variety Special (Live), meaning that after sixty years in show business, he is in the EGOT club.
Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium beat The Oscars, The Tonys, Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, and Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.
John was not there to accept the award, and other producers of the special accepted the award for him.
“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight,” John said in a statement released shortly after his Emmy win was televised. “The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
EGOT is a term coined by Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas that celebrates people who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
John won five Grammys (including a Grammy Legend Award), two Oscars (for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman), and won his Tony for Best Original Score for Aida.
John is the 19th person to complete the EGOT. Other recent winners include Viola Davis, Jennifer Hudson, and Alan Menken.
