Emily Post’s Great-Great Granddaughter Calls This Wedding Rule a Thing of the Past

It’s a guideline that’s haunted money conscious wedding guests for generations, and now it appears that the “cover your plate” rule is finally a thing of the past.

Lizzie Post, the great-great granddaughter of Emily Post and co-host of Emily Post’s “Awesome Etiquette” podcast, recently told CNBC that the value of your wedding gift does not need to “cover your plate” after all. According to Post, the new and improved rule is that you should give “whatever you can afford.”

Post went on to call the cover your plate rule a "misconception in American culture."

“Your gift should always be within your personal budget,” continued Post. “You decide that based on your connection to the person getting married, your own gift-giving style, desire and generosity in that moment and what’s feasible for you to do.”

The reason, Post explained, is that as a guest, you should never know the cost of the wedding, and you shouldn’t have to speculate either. "It's none of your business," Post said. "They might have had a family friend who catered all the food. Or they might have had unlimited funds, and you don't have to know that either."

We always knew that attending a wedding should never put you in the red, but it sure is nice to hear it from the country’s foremost etiquette expert!
