An Emmy Winner Just Turned His Acceptance Speech Into a Proposal — Yes, Really
Just when we started burning out on Emmys night, the winner of Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special (the most exciting category, clearly) brought the D-R-A-M-A.
Glenn Weiss, who won for his work on the 2018 Oscars, began his speech on a “bittersweet” note, addressing the recent loss of his mother. “The person who would be the most proud at this moment would be my mom, but she passed away just two weeks ago. Part of my heart is broken, I don’t think it’ll ever be repaired, but she’s in me and she always will be.”
And then came the aww part… “Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend, Jan.” Here we go. Close up on said “Jan” (Jan Svendsen), glittering in a Sachin and Babi cap-sleeved gown. “Jan, you are the sunshine in my life, and my mother was right: Don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? It’s because I want to call you my wife.”
OH. MY.
After Jan joined her not-boyfriend onstage, Weiss continued, brandishing a ring (the one his mom was given by his father 67 years prior, he explained, adding a caveat to his siblings that their father was aware that he had the ring — yes, this acceptance speech covered a whole lot of bases). “Jan, I want to put this ring, that my mom wore, on your finger in front of all these people, and in front of my mom and your parents, watching from above. Will you marry me?”
AND. SHE. SAID. YES.
Movie — make that TV — magic is real.
