'Everybody Loves Raymond': See the Cast of the Hilarious Sitcom Today

Flip through the channels at any given time of day and you're likely to find a re-run of Everybody Loves Raymond, the hilarious cast bringing loads of laughs to whatever room it's playing in. Running from 1996 to 2005, the series was led by Ray Romano as Ray Barone, a Long Island husband, father and son who was the source of our hysterics episode after episode — but he wasn't the only one. His overbearing parents, jealous brother and the laugh-out-loud antics of his wife and children also held their own in this revered sitcom.

What is Everybody Loves Raymond about?

Everybody Loves Raymond chronicled the life of Ray Barone, played by Ray Romano. Surrounding his character were his wife Debra, who took on nearly all of the responsibility around their household, much to her dismay, his mother and father, who lived across the street and had no problem inserting themselves when they saw fit, and his brother Robert, a morose police officer jealous of Ray's success and status as the favored brother.

Ray Romano as Ray Barone

After his pivotal role on Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Romano has continued to have success in Hollywood, acting in both television and film. His most notable TV work has been on series such as Men of a Certain Age, Parenthood, Vinyl, Get Shorty, Made for Love and Pete Davidson's Bupkis. Some of his prominent movie roles have been in The Big Sick (2017) and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman (2019). As far as a reboot of the beloved sitcom, Ray Romano recently revealed on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher that it wasn't in the cards.

"As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts,” he explained. “They’re never as good,” Romano explained on such television series revivals. “We want to leave with our legacy as what it is.”

Patricia Heaton as Debra Barone

Heaton, who won two Emmy awards for her role as Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, was a beloved member of the cast. Her character made audiences laugh as she dealt with the antics of her high-maintenance mother-in-law, hectic family life and less-than-helpful husband.

After her award-winning role as Debra, Patricia Heaton acted in series such as Back to You, Versailles and Easy to Assemble before taking on the role of Frankie Heck in The Middle, as well as a role in Carol's Second Act. In 2020, she released her book, Your Second Act: Inspiring Stories of Reinvention.

Brad Garrett as Robert Barone in the Everybody Loves Raymond cast

Brad Garrett's character of Robert Barone was one of a kind and earned him three Emmy wins over the course of his time on the show. Known for his tall stature and distinctly baritone voice, Garrett played the role like no other.

"You know what’s funny? I had to fight for that audition. They just didn’t see me doing it. Even Ray was like, 'Nah, not the guy from Star Search' — which I understand, because no one wanted a giant. But the minute I read the script, I begged my managers at the time. I said, 'I know this guy!' The minute I read it, I just had a very different way of playing it. They were reaching out to a couple of other actors and I begged to just go read for the creator, Phil Rosenthal. They wanted a Danny DeVito type, a little pit bull guy," Garrett explained to Edge Magazine.

He continued, "As an actor, I had this thing I used to use. I used to say that Ray’s an only child and they forgot to tell Robert. That was my little thing. But there’s a fine line of not playing anger, but playing frustration. So they kept Robert frustrated, and in a lot of ways, he had the upper hand in certain episodes over Raymond, but the family wouldn’t allow it. So, there were a lot of fun things to play. But I owe a lot to the writing. The writing was so good on that show. They knew how to write for this character so well."

After his time on the show came to an end, he's continued to work steadily. He acted in the series 'Til Death, How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life), The Crazy Ones, Fargo, I'm Dying Up Here, Single Parents, Bupkis, High Desert, and many more.

Doris Roberts as Marie Barone in the Everybody Loves Raymond cast

Doris Roberts brought to life one of the most iconic characters on the show: Ray and Robert's overbearing mother, who could often be found tormenting Debra or arguing with her husband. After Everybody Loves Raymond, she continued to act in both television and movies, making appearances in series such as Grey's Anatomy, The Middle, Hot in Cleveland, Desperate Housewives, Melissa & Joey and more.

In a 2015 interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, she talked about why the show remains beloved after so long: "I think it’s still popular because it’s based on reality. The relationships are based on reality. There were wonderful writers on the show and wonderful actors. I loved working with Peter Boyle. It was a joy to work with him. He died, you know. But we had a good time working together." She continued, "Ray Romano is a great guy. He’s real and he’s honest. He has great integrity. He works real hard." Sadly, Roberts passed away in 2016.

Peter Boyle as Frank Barone in the Everybody Loves Raymond cast

The cranky father to Ray and Robert and husband to Marie, Peter Boyle played Frank Barone like no other could have. While he had great success prior to his role on the show, he continued working once it came to an end in films like The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006), The Shallow End of the Ocean (2007) and All Roads Lead Home (2008).

"I knew when we were making the Everybody Loves Raymond pilot that it was really good. That almost seven years later I would be sitting here — I didn't know that," Boyle said in an interview with Esquire published in 2007. "It's a really good show, and I really feel good about it. It makes me happy. It makes me less neurotic. It helps me. When I was a starving actor, life had no structure except suffer, suffer, suffer." Sadly, he passed away in 2006.
