An Exclusive First Look at the 2019 US Open Ballperson Uniforms
The unsung heroes of the United States Open Tennis tournament are its ballpersons, and this year they have a colorful new uniform courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren to stand out in the courts at Flushing Meadow. Lauren, which has been the official outfitter of the Open since 2005, channeled 90s flair for the playful outfit, which T&C is revealing exclusively today (the tournament began Monday at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center). There's throwback items like bucket hats, rugby stripes, and oversize graphics, references that "will resonate strongly with our millennial consumer," said David Lauren chief innovation officer. Additionally, as part of Ralph Lauren’s Design the Change campaign to use 170 million recycled plastic bottles by 2025, each uniform is made from seven recycled plastic bottles through a specially woven performance fabric. The brand launched this sustainable strategy earlier this year, and next year plans to take it one step further: by collecting over 12,000 tennis ball cans in partnership with Wilson to be recycled into the 2020 uniforms.
