Family looks for support after dog hit by car
Sep. 9—Last Saturday started as a normal work day for Will and Jennifer Thomas of BAP Kustoms in Corsicana. The morning changed, however, after their dog Damien, a half German shepherd/half Rottweiler, was hit by a car. Though Damien survived, the dog is injured, and in need of critical life-saving care.
The dog was struck on West State Hwy. 31 after leaving the business property.
"We heard a vehicle tire squeal, and my husband had said it sounded like an animal had gotten hit," Jennifer said. "We were already running to the road to see if anyone needed help. I was looking around and didn't see anything until my husband said Damien's name. We see Damien by the RV entrance coming toward us limping. Then we saw his leg was gushing blood out and his bone was completely exposed."
According to Jennifer, three cars stopped for the dog, but one didn't.
"They didn't even stop to see if he was okay," Jennifer said.
After visiting an emergency veterinarian, Damien's right leg and hip were found to be badly injured, and the leg may need amputation. Without the care, the dog is at risk of being euthanized.
Despite applying for medical credit, the Thomas family is facing additional costs for treatment, medication and surgery. They have started a GoFundMe in hopes that people in the community will be able to contribute to cover expenses.
Since opening BAP Kustoms in October of 2021, Damien has been a fixture around the veteran-owned repair shop.
"He is here with us all day every day," Jennifer said. "He loves to greet new people and get butt pats like a cat."
"He doesn't deserve this," Jennifer added. "He's only 4 (years old) and he is the sweetest boy, a gentle giant. He's my husband's emotional support pup, too."
Despite the injury, Jennifer remains optimistic the medical care will help Damien heal from his injury.
"Damien has a long recovery," Jennifer said, noting the veterinarian said it is up to God and Damien's healing process.
