'In this family, nobody fights alone': Officers walk fallen deputy's son to school

Bill Brewer, a 42-year-old deputy for Ohio’s Clermont County, was one of two deputies shot on Feb. 2 at a Pierce Township apartment complex during a 12-hour standoff with a gunman. Brewer died from injuries sustained from a gun shot wound, leaving behind 5-year-old son, Braxton, and wife, Jamie.

Hundreds of mourners gathered to honor the police officer, as well as provide support to his family as he was laid to rest last week. People lined the streets as the procession for the late officer drove from the church to the cemetery. His body was followed by a riderless horse, while bagpipes and drums played at the cemetery. He was honored with a 21-gun salute and the sound of taps.

While Braxton proudly served his community for 20 years, it was his son of which he was most proud.

“[He was] proud as a peach of his son — loved his son,” Batavia Township Administrator Rex Parsons told WLWT. “He would come in and tell me stories about how his son was growing up when he was only 5. So, Bill was seeing him progress through stages of life and was so excited about it.”

On Tuesday, to ensure that Braxton was never alone, he was brought to school by his father’s co-workers. Ohio Going Blue reports that the young student was escorted to school by nearly 20 officers.

The Ohio Going Blue account shared, “In this family, nobody flights alone.”

The Clermont County Sherrif’s office did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment.
