Here’s Our First Look At The Tomb Raider Animated Series
Tomb Raider The Legend of Lara Croft trailer
Netflix announced its Tomb Raider animated series so long ago that we’d been beginning to think it had been canceled. Thankfully, in today’s Netflix Drop 01 presentation, Netflix finally lifted the lid on its upcoming series, and it’s looking pretty alright.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is an all-new Tomb Raider story that may or may not be related to Crystal Dynamics’ rebooted Tomb Raider series. It’s a little complicated. When the series was first announced, it was definitely related, but since then Crystal Dynamics has been sold and bought, by Square Enix and Embracer Group, respectively. Does that change things? Who knows.
Either way, the first-look teaser for the new series opens with some heavy breathing, revealed to be Lara herself steadying her breath as she prepares to fire off an arrow. After that, we see brief glimpses of Lara doing some tomb raiding, as she does, looking at a photograph, surviving a fire. Y’know, Tomb Raider stuff. Take a look for yourself.
IGN is reporting that the series is being produced by Powerhouse Animation, a studio based in Texas that signed a content deal with Netflix back in 2021 — around about the same time that Netflix announced its Tomb Raider series. Powerhouse has worked on a number of series, primarily as a support studio on things like Castlevania and OK K.O.!, but it does have a few solo projects under its belt too.
No firm release date has been set for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, but Netflix says it’ll be out sometime in 2024. With so many other animated series coming from Netflix, we don’t think that’ll be a difficult wait.
In the meantime, why not check out Castlevania: Nocturne, which releases tomorrow? Netflix showed off the first three episodes of the series in its Drop 01 presentation, and it was absolutely delightful. We’ll have more on that in the coming days and weeks, but you should definitely check it out.
