Five Shore foods to add to your summer bucket list

At the Shore, summer isn't summer without Jersey corn, fresh seafood and all the ice cream you can eat.

Boardwalk food — specifically sausage and pepper sandwiches, pizza and fudge — make the list, too.

But there are other foods that are best when eaten this time of year, too, either because they are only around for a few months or because they just taste better on long, sunny days.

As summer gets under way, here are five foods that can't be missed.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, customers flock to Crêperie de la Mer for crepes that are made while they watch.

The crêperie serves more than a dozen sweet and savory crepes, including ones filled with salted butter and brown sugar; Nutella and banana; orange marmalade and Grand Marnier; smoked salmon and lemon dill crème fra?che; and smoked ham, gruyère cheese, egg, maple syrup and strawberry compote.

In a time of high food prices, a lobster dinner for less than $40 sounds impossible.

But Boondocks Fishery, a seasonal seafood shack on the Navesink River, has offered such a dinner deal for years. Tuesdays through Thursdays, the restaurant serves a special of two lobsters, roasted potatoes and corn on the cob for $36.95. The meal is available starting at 4 p.m.

Leave the credit cards at home — Boondock's is cash only — but do BYOB.

Fuel up for a beach day with a breakfast sandwich at Beach Shack Deli, which Asbury Park Press readers named one of the best pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches at the Shore.

"The sandwich is all about the layers," owner Matt Rega said. "We do an egg, then cheese, then two slices of pork roll, then another egg, and then top it off with two more slices of pork roll and more cheese. It’s all those factors, layered in that one bite, topped with ketchup, salt and pepper."

Get it now, though — the deli is only open in the summer.

Crumb cake at Mueller's Bakery, Bay Head

Some things are worth waiting in line for, and crumb cake from Mueller's is one of them.

Their traditional version is topped with powdered sugar or icing, and the bakery also makes versions filled with raspberry and blueberry.

For those who only eat crumb cake for the crumbs, Mueller's also sells them by the bag.

A lot along the boardwalk at 7th Avenue in Asbury Park comes to life in the summer as North Eats, a food truck food court.

Half a dozen trucks gather each day, including Zappa, which sells open-face sandwiches called zapiekanak; Johnny's Pork Roll and Coffee Too, known for its pork roll sandwiches; and Sprout House, which makes vegan and vegetarian dishes.
