We Found The Best Copycat Recipe For The Viral Olympic Chocolate Muffins

If you've been watching the 2024 Olympics this summer, you'll know that the athletes aren't the only ones receiving high scores. This year, the food menu served to athletes at the Olympic Village was given a Parisian-worthy makeover. But in a twist on classic French pastries, the most sought-after dessert isn't a croissant or pain au chocolat, but a double chocolate muffin. And thanks to one Olympic athlete, the baked good has become the talk of the Village and beyond. Luckily, you don't have to book a plane ticket to Paris to indulge in this decadent treat. I found a copycat recipe that will have you feeling like a winner. Plus, learn how to get the perfect gooey center. Here's how to make the viral Olympic chocolate muffins.

What are the viral Olympic chocolate muffins?

According to Sodexo Live!, the catering company for the Olympic Village, the muffins are made by the French bakery Coup de Pates. A representative from Sodexo Live! revealed that the muffins' popularity skyrocketed thanks to Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen. Dubbed the “Olympic Village Muffin Man,” Christiansen’s enthusiasm for the treat has helped it go viral. Watch the TikTok video below to see the athlete's obsession.

Officially called "Maxi Muffin Chocolate Intense," the muffins weigh in at 130 grams and are presented in elegant tulip cups. Sodexo Live! reported to PEOPLE that around 2,000 muffins are consumed each day. Over the course of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the company plans to serve a staggering 100,000 muffins.

Despite the widespread popularity, Sodexo Live! kept the recipe a closely guarded secret. However, we do know they are "topped with rich dark chocolate, featuring chunks of both dark and milk chocolate."

The secrets to perfect Olympic chocolate muffins

The secret to these muffins lies in their decadent chocolate ganache filling, which adds a luscious, gooey center you would normally find in a lava cake. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your batch comes out on top:

1. Use high-quality chocolate

Opt for premium dark chocolate chunks instead of chips to ensure a richer flavor and more luxurious texture.

2. Don't be afraid of coffee

Adding a small amount of coffee to the batter will enhance the chocolate's depth, making the muffins taste even more delicious.

3. Don't overmix

Mix the ingredients just until combined to keep the muffins tender and moist. Overmixing can lead to a dense, tough texture.
