"Good Morning America" Just Got Expanded

Get ready for a lot more Good Morning America. ABC announced Wednesday it was expanding the morning show for a third hour.

The third hour of the morning show will air at 1 p.m. Eastern time, noon Central and Pacific time, though it has yet to be announced when it will begin. The network promises the third hour will have more news, pop culture, interviews, and live events. USA Today notes that competitor NBC, which airs the Today show, already runs a four-hour block every day.

Otherwise, ABC is staying tight-lipped on details, and will announce elements like anchors and the title of the show as months go on. (Though Good Afternoon America wouldn't be such a bad title.) The current Good Morning America anchors are Robin Roberts, George Stephanopolous, Michael Strahan, and meteorologist Ginger Zee, and it’s unclear if they’ll stick around into the afternoon broadcast.

But with that good news comes with some sad news for food fans: ABC is canceling The Chew after seven seasons to make room for the new Good Morning America hour. Some soap opera fans still rue the day The Chew hit TV screens, since it replaced All My Children and One Life to Live.

“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet. For seven years The Chew has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere,” Ben Sherwood, the president of ABC Television, said in a press release.
