Gossip you haven't heard from inside the Golden Globes: lost spouses, fangirling, bromance
One of the fascinating things about attending the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel versus watching it on TV is being able to see the stars interact IRL. It’s a night of interesting and unlikely pairings, of people gravitating toward one another for moments of awesomeness before careening back into their own orbits, of the famous and infamous fanboying and fangirling over one another in a way that makes them seem just like us. Watching these moments, which often are not caught on camera, makes the show all the more fun.
For example, there were several people who everyone gravitated to throughout the night. In the early hours, the contest for most popular person in the room was a tie between the kids from Stranger Things and actor-comedian Billy Eichner. Any time one of them would try to take a seat, someone would come over to chat them up, give them praise, or take a picture (and none of them seemed to mind that they were missing out on the Globes’ famously early dinner offerings as a result).
But Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, whose daughter Simone was this year’s Golden Globe Ambassador, was also a contender. Johnson inspired true pandemonium among show attendees across every age, sexual orientation, and relationship status. They all clamored for a photo with him, despite the stated rule that cell phone photography would result in ejection from the ballroom. Apparently, the Rock is worth the risk, and countless people threw themselves at his feet. (OK, maybe not literally. But you got the feeling that had everyone not been in their best formal wear, they might have taken their adoration that far.)
By the end of the night, actors Kate Hudson and Armie Hammer were the belles of the ball. Neither seemed capable of taking more than a couple of steps for the door before they were stopped for hugs and kisses from well-wishers. They caused a traffic jam among the crowd, resulting in the remainder of attendees filtering out on either side of the throng.
Of course, there were also the romantic relationships you expect to see at the Globes, and the ones you hope are as good in person as they seem to be on TV and in magazines. We’re talking about actress Nicole Kidman and her husband, country music crooner Keith Urban, who are just as adorable as you’d both hope and expect. The two were glued at the hip all night, and they were always touching — holding hands, Urban guiding Kidman by the arm, or Urban placing his hand at the small of Kidman’s back. The two managed to nudge so close to one another, it was as if they were magnets.
And that love was spread throughout the Golden Globes ballroom. When Kidman talked about Urban in her acceptance speech — she won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in Big Little Lies — and what it’s like to be cheek to cheek with him, the entire audience melted into the puddle of a collective “awww!” and started a murmured discussion about relationship goals.
Sometimes, the opportunity for new relationships surface, and we certainly hope that’s the case for actors Hammer and Chris Hemsworth, who strode purposefully toward the back bar, parting the crowd like the Red Sea and leaving dropped jaws in their wake. Everyone immediately fell to their respective chiseled, dirty-blond, tall and handsome charms. No word on what the duo drank or discussed, but if this is a new Hollywood bromance forming, we’re fully onboard.
And then there’s the friendships you kind of hope are happening, but don’t always get visual confirmation on until an awards show brings everyone together. One such example is director Ava DuVernay and CBS This Morning anchor-Oprah BFF Gayle King, who helped each other swim upstream of the crowd, attempting to tsunami their way out of the ballroom as the Globes came to a close. DuVernay is close with the Mighty O, of course. Winfrey and DuVernay have partnered on several creative projects, the most recent being the upcoming big screen adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. But seeing DuVernay and King palling around was a delight.
Finally, even the most seasoned Hollywood players can find themselves overwhelmed by the Globes crowd — and lose track of their spouses in the process. That’s what happened to actor Seth Rogen after the show. As adoring fans waited behind roped areas in the lobby of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Rogen ignored the desperate cries of his name as he searched high and low for his wife, actress Lauren Miller.
A fan stopped him to ask for a selfie, but Rogen waved her off, saying, “I need to find my wife!” The fan said she understood, and Rogen continued his hunt, deep in the world of Golden Globes after-parties.
