Your Guide to the New Characters in 'Sex Education'
The closure of Sex Education’s Moordale Secondary School is a seismic event both on and off screen, and resulted in a number of major characters leaving the show ahead of its fourth and final season. Fans were stunned to hear that Ola (Patricia Allison), Lily (Tanya Reynolds) and Jakob (Jakob Nyman) would not be returning to the show. Season 4 finds the rest of the ensemble arriving for a new school year at Cavendish College, a progressive utopia where kindness is cool, bullying is (seemingly) non-existent, and there are a whole bunch of new faces in the mix. Here’s your guide to all the new main characters in Sex Education Season 4.

Sarah “O” Owen (Thaddea Graham)
Samuel Taylor/Netflix
Given the progressive, emotionally open vibe at Cavendish, it should be no surprise that they already have a long-running student sex therapist. O is warm, patient and insightful, and seems completely unflappable, which only makes her more threatening to Otis. But O has a few skeletons in her closet—specifically, a history of bullying, which comes to light as she and Otis face off for the sex therapist title in a student election.
Abbi (Anthony Lexa)
Samuel Taylor/Netflix
Abbi is Cavendish’s queen bee, but without any of the mean girl tendencies that phrase implies. She’s a confident, bright and generous young trans woman who never has a bad word to say about anyone, and discourages gossip and “bad vibes.” Her commitment to positivity does have its drawbacks, though, and eventually starts to grate on her boyfriend, Roman, and her best friend Aisha, who sometimes feel silenced by her refusal to hear anything negative.
Roman (Felix Mufti)
As Abbi’s boyfriend, Roman is the other half of Cavendish College’s most popular power couple. He’s also trans-masculine, and becomes an important confidant for Cal as they struggle with gender dysphoria this season—Roman reveals that he has a supportive family who was able to pay for his top surgery, which isn’t an option for Cal. Although he has a strong relationship with Abbi, the couple has some communication issues which arise through the season.
Aisha (Alexandra James)
Aisha is the third member of the popular group known as “the Coven,” alongside Abbi and Roman. Aisha is deaf, as is the actress who portrays her, Alexandra James—she wears a hearing aid, and is also a skilled lip reader. She’s a sunny and supportive person, but she also has a penchant for gossip and at times gets frustrated with Abbi’s ironclad commitment to “good vibes only.”

Joanna Milburn (Lisa McGrillis)
Joanna is Jean’s free-spirited younger sister. She’s extremely fun and loving, but she’s also all of the most chaotic aspects of Jean turned up to 11, without any of the therapeutic insight to balance them out. She’s wildly irresponsible and has never really committed to anything, which turns out to be a defense mechanism to avoid dealing with some severe childhood trauma.
Thomas Molloy (Dan Levy)
Thomas Wood/Netflix
During Maeve’s time at Wallace University’s writing program in the U.S., she’s taught by Thomas Molloy, a renowned author who seems to take a little too much pleasure in critiquing his students’ work. Although Maeve endears herself to him by referencing his obscure early work rather than his recent bestseller, his brutal feedback on her writing prompts her to reconsider her dreams.
