Gwyneth Paltrow Wore the Most Elevated Version of My Go-To Wardrobe Basic

Her look is a masterclass in chic-yet-comfy dressing.
When Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted out and about during New York Fashion Week, I couldn’t believe how simple she was dressed, nor could I believe how drawn to it I was. Surrounded by fashion risks and off-the-runway looks, it was hard not to appreciate her normal—though still elegant—look.
Paltrow stuck to the basics, wearing a white T-shirt, trench coat, cargos, and sneakers. But it was the details that gave this no-fuss outfit an everyday-chic feel. Her trench was cropped, hitting right at her hips, while those navy pants had an almost satin look to them that created the perfect shine and drape. Even her white sneakers, which featured a small platform, were the most elevated version of the footwear staple.
Loose cargos and white sneakers are what I already reach for when I want to be comfortable, but Paltrow just convinced me to elevate them. Why not feel and look good? Below, shop the styles I’m eyeing inspired by her not-so-basic basics.

Madewell Satin Cargo Trousers
I really love how Madewell dressed up the classically casual style. Pairing lustrous satin with a polished straight-leg and classic trouser details (pleats, belt loops, and a high waist!), these cargo pants look shockingly luxurious. While blue gets you Paltrow’s look, you can also shop them in a sandy brown and rich olive green, a shade that, IMO, is perfect for fall.
Adidas Bravada 2.0 Platform Sneaker
These Bravada 2.0 sneakers look nearly identical to Paltrow’s, from the classic white canvas to the small platform. But with sneakers, the feel is arguably just as (if not more) important; fortunately, shoppers say these offer comfortable cushioning and arch support, making them great for all day wear.
Eileen Fisher Silk Drawstring Cargo Pants
Eileen Fisher’s take on the classic cargo is ideal for the person who craves luxury and comfort. The pants feature a loose leg and a drawstring waist, two elements you might associate with sweatpants. But these are made with 100-percent silk, giving the relaxed silhouette a dressed-up appearance. Fans love everything from the “sophisticated” draping you get from the silk to the fact that the style is as “comfortable as pajamas but look really nice.”
