Halsey praised for normalizing breastfeeding after sharing photo of herself nursing her newborn
Weeks after posing — while pregnant — with one breast exposed for her latest album cover art in a bid to celebrate mothers' bodies and chip away at the "social stigma" surrounding breastfeeding, new mom Halsey is experiencing the real thing firsthand.
The 26-year-old singer, who uses she/they pronouns, is marking World Breastfeeding Week by sharing a photo of herself nursing their newborn baby in a park. Halsey and boyfriend Alev Aydin welcomed their first child, Ender Ridley, on July 14.
"We arrived just in time," the "Bad at Love" singer said of the global event, which supports and raises awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.
The post already has more than 3.6 million likes, with fans gushing over the "precious" moment. Many also thanked the pop star for "using your platform to normalize breastfeeding."
"[There's] not enough representation at all and it really is an incredibly hard yet beautiful journey," read one comment.
That jibes with Halsey's statement last month explaining the inspiration for their bare-breasted, baby-clutching shoot for If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power.
"This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth,” she shared.
“It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the Whore. The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being."
She continued, “This cover image celebrates pregnant and postpartum bodies as something beautiful, to be admired. We have a long way to go with eradicating the social stigma around bodies and breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step in the right direction!”
