'This is who I am': HBCU alumni talk about their 'unapologetic' style evolution
It’s homecoming season, and alumni and students alike are gathering to celebrate their universities. This year, we’ve been detailing the rich legacy of homecoming at HBCUs — historically black colleges and universities initially founded on the premise of providing higher education for people of color before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
At these institutions, students not only like to show up, but they also love to show out with elaborate, stylish outfits, dressed up in their very best to honor the legacy of their institution. Whether it is a “comfy-chic” look, as Melissa Butler from Florida A&M University describes to Yahoo Lifestyle, or straight-up “extra,” as Jarett Arrington from Morehouse College says, it is a special time when most people enjoy adding a little more flair to their weekend wardrobes.
This year, Yahoo Lifestyle caught up with 12 people from some of the most prestigious HBCUs to find out about their HBCU homecoming fashion choices, as well as hear how their personal style has evolved through the years. Check out the video above to see exactly what everyone had to say, and prepare to be totally inspired.
Happy homecoming!
