Here's Why Ariana Grande's New Song "7 Rings" Sounds Eerily Familiar

Listening to Ariana Grande's new bop "7 Rings" might be giving you some serious deja vous. And no, it's not because you heard a snippet of the song at the beginning of her iconic "Thank U, Next" music video.
Ari actually reworked The Sound of Music's "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" to use as part of "7 Rings". That pop-y string base you hear behind her savage lyrics is actually borrowed from a much more innocent musical hit written by Robert Wise in 1965.
In The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent who is sent away to be governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp. Once there, she starts to educate the children, and much of her teachings are done through song. She, of course, belts out the iconic "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" while dancing around a bedroom in her nightgown.
The original lyrics include lines like: "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favorite things."
Of course, Ariana's lyrics are a touch more fierce. While you can read an entire lyrics breakdown here, she has some choice lines in the song like:
Yeah, breakfast at Tiffany's and bottles of bubbles
Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble
Lashes and diamonds, ATM machines
Buy myself all of my favorite things (Yeah)
I wonder what Julie Andrews would think of bottles of bubbles and girls with tats? Maybe she's be into it? The music video is definitely filled with them.
The mash-up does make sense though. In the original, Maria sings about all of her favorite things and how, when she focuses on them, she knows everything will be alright after all.
And for Ari, this sentiment seems to ring true. After surviving the Manchester bombing, losing her ex and friend Mac Miller to suicide and then breaking off her engagement (all while experiencing anxiety), Ari is starting off 2019 by looking for the silver lining. If "TUN" and "7 Rings" proves anything it's that, for Ari, her friendships and taking pride in her well-deserved success make her smile for days.
