High school football player arrested in death of pregnant classmate
A 17-year-old high school junior’s body was found in a dumpster near her Indiana home on Sunday, and police have arrested a 16-year-old classmate on a preliminary murder charge, the Associated Press reports.
Lt. Alex Arendt of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said Aaron Trejo was arrested Sunday, CBS News reports. He is in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail and is being held without bond.
Trejo, who is suspected of killing Breana Rouhselang, was on the Mishawaka High School football team, and Breana reportedly was a team manager. Rouhselang was also a cheerleader and a softball coach at the high school, AP reports.
Though the full extent of their relationship is unknown, Breana’s stepmom told South Bend, Ind., news station WNDU-TV that Breana was six months pregnant.
Breana’s family reportedly saw her last on Saturday night and called the police when they got worried early Sunday morning. Police located her body in a restaurant dumpster about a block from her house, and her classmate was arrested the same day, AP reported. The cause of death hasn’t yet been determined.
Officials said Trejo would be charged as an adult on Monday.
Mishawaka High School will make counselors available to students.
“We’re just focusing on healing the kids,” Meg Sauer, chief communications officer for the school district, said in a statement to the Indianapolis Star. “Many of them have never suffered a loss, especially like this one.”
