High school student with autism wins prom king, classmates erupt in cheers
A Nevada high school student with autism took home the title of prom king. Now, footage of his dance with the prom queen as his peers at Liberty High School cheer them on is warming hearts across social media.
Fox 13 reports that the new prom king, Edgar, was happily surprised to be presented with the crown on his prom night after another student, Shaun, “stepped down from the honor” and asked that Edgar be crowned instead.
The video shows a school official naming Edgar as prom king as classmates chant his name in support. After sharing a quick hug with the official, Edgar took the prom queen to the dance floor as Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” played.
“This renews my hope in future generations,” one person shared on Facebook. “A simple act of kindness can mean so much to an individual with Autism. This probably made his parents night even more. It’s so hard not knowing if my child will be accepted in school or ostracized. I hope he has friends like these.”
Another wrote: “This was so touching to see that humanity is still alive. These teens are exceptional and their parents should be so proud. Great joy and blessing to all of you. He will never forget your kindness.”
One commenter wrote that she’s not surprised this happened at this Nevada school. “This is the school my mom teaches at, she is a special education teacher (not Edgar’s teacher) there and I can tell you this school is AMAZING! The students there are really something to be proud of.”
