Historic Preservation Society holding annual picnic
The Kernersville Historic Preservation Society is hosting its annual picnic on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Fourth of July Park.
Mandy Cheek, the president of the Kernersville Historic Preservation Society, noted that the picnic has been a longstanding tradition.
“The picnic is an annual event that we do every September. The picnic is open to the public and guests. The members typically bring a dish to share like a potluck. We sit under the picnic area, listen to the presenter and have a brief business meeting,” Cheek said.
The picnic will feature guest speaker Ernie Pages, the town of Kernersville’s Parks and Recreation director.
“He’s going to be updating us on the different projects they have going on around the town. We have the rec center that’s getting ready to open. They’ve completed the visitors center in the last year. He’ll bring us up to date on that. They’re currently working to get repairs done at the old schoolhouse at the Fourth of July Park as well,” Cheek said. “The other important aspect is the community engagement and involvement because the people that come to the KHPS meetings are interested in what’s happening in the community and how they get plugged in and involved with that.”
Cheek said that support from the community is essential to the society.
“Without community involvement we wouldn’t have an organization or meetings. The reason that we exist is to serve the community,” Cheek said. “I want to let people that they can come and participate.”
The Kernersville Historic Preservation Society holds bi-monthly meetings on a variety of topics, and the society has stewardship of the St. Paul’s AME Cemetery.
Throughout the year, volunteers and history enthusiasts have the opportunity to get involved with the Kernersville Historic Preservation Society. The society’s latest programs have featured Margaret Burks on “The Heart of Kernersville”, Michelle McCullough on “Historic Preservation 101”, and more.
Fourth of July Park is at 702 W. Mountain St.
