J.J. Abrams Confirmed What Finn Was Going to Tell Rey in 'The Rise of Skywalker'
If you watched Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker over the weekend, and were left thinking that maybe, just maybe, a clerical error led to someone losing a couple pages from the script, then you’re not alone.
One of those Why didn’t we come back to this moments? Early on in the film, when the sequel trilogy’s new hero crew gets themselves stuck in a sandpit. Getting stuck in things—classic Star Wars problem! As they sink, and sink, Finn blurts out Rey’s name, and says he wants to tell her something. Whoops—they all sink before he can finish the thought. And whatever Finn had to say to Rey apparently wasn’t important enough to revisit in the movie.
Thanks to The Rise of Skywalker’s director, J.J. Abrams, we know what Finn had on his mind. At the Academy screening of the film, Abrams, during an audience Q&A, said that Finn was going to spill the beans that he was force-sensitive. Makes sense! Elsewhere in the film, he sniffs out an important location based on a feeling, and if you’ll remember, he was sorta-competent with a lightsaber in The Force Awakens.
That squashes what most fans were likely thinking—that Finn was finally going to profess his love for Rey, a crush that was teased, at least, in The Force Awakens. John Boyega squashed that one himself:
For what it’s worth, I’m a little disappointed it wasn’t any of these:
“We’re gonna be fine—I’m sure I’ll just sink straight into a different transport!”
“Count me outta dis one! Better dead here than deader in the Core! Ye Gods, whatta mesa sayin?!”
“Babu Frik or Baby Yoda?”
“I don’t wanna be in this movie!”
“Rey, does your grandfather… fuck?”
