Jenna Bush Hager Shares Big Life Update for 5-Year-Old Son Hal

Jenna Bush Hager's youngest child, Hal, is quickly growing up!

Parade spoke with the Today co-host about her recent campaign with Kleenex, the household tissue brand, which celebrates its 100th anniversary by gifting educators and students the supplies they need to get through the year.

As a working mom of three and former teacher, she is well-versed in teaching responsibility and the benefits of planning ahead. Thus, the latest update in her 5-year-old son's life is a pretty fabulous win for someone with limited time in the morning.

When asked to share a life hack for parents with school-age children eager to help cut down on the chaos of the morning rush, the 42-year-old said she has her kids "lay out their clothes the night before–and really, they all lay them out."

Historically, "Hal has not" picked out his own clothes, but this year is different, "I’m gonna have him do it," Bush Hager said.

While she doesn't necessarily consider it a "hack," she confirmed that her "mornings are less stressful” when her kids carry out the responsibility of figuring out what they're going to wear the night before.

Hal, as well as her two older kids, daughters Mila and Poppy, are also tasked with organizing their backpacks, something they do every day after school.

"Right when they get home from school, they throw out anything they need to. Before they go to bed, they make sure their water bottles are in it, they make sure their homework is in their backpacks," she explained. "They kind of do a little checklist, and we help, but I want them to lead it.”

Likewise, if lunches need to be made, they're getting prepped before Bush Hager heads to bed. “As much as you can do the night before–I know, this is an age-old hack; I am not creating this–but I think as much as you can do the night before is helpful."

"And I think it sort of relieves my ‘Mom’s Guilt’ cause I’m not there in the mornings," she added. "So as much as I can help out my husband [Henry Hager] the night before so that there’s a seamless, easier morning, I try to do it.”

Other things she's added to her to-do list before we hit the heart of back-to-school season include partnering with Kleenex to gift a massive $100,000 donation to one well-deserving school and see another $400,000 distributed among 100 others nominated by their communities.

"I think even just based on the symbolism alone, that Kleenex would be one of the top things that we would bring into our schools shows how important teachers are to our culture, to our communties," Bush Hager told Parade.

To nominate a school, visit kleenex100years.com now through Monday, Aug. 26, and complete a two-part written prompt explaining why you think it deserves the donations. According to the brand, "Schools will be evaluated based on an objective set of criteria, and the selected schools will be those who exemplify Kleenex’s mission of providing students with resources to face everyday moments of vulnerability and thrive."
