Joan Collins, 90, Shares Her Extremely Relatable Shopping Habits
Joan Collins is known for her flashy fashion–especially the choices made by her iconic Dynasty character Alexis Carrington Colby–and she wants to keep it that way, especially ahead of her upcoming UK tour.
Collins, 90, admitted to The Sunday Times reporters that she rarely dresses down and when it comes to shopping for herself, she "doesn't have time." But apparently, there's one store that she can always count on to look fabulous, and we bet you probably shop there too (we know we do).
After gushing over her Chanel shoes, silk kaftans, and custom dresses designed for her fall tour, the British actress told the outlet that she's also "not averse to buying things at Target."
"I love Target," she said before sharing one of her best purchases from the retail giant. "A leopard-skin bathing suit, which I photographed on Instagram — $28."
"It got so many likes," Collins continued. "Everybody thought it was Dolce."
Her eye for style isn't something she takes for granted, as she's been training it since well before she was famous and continues to challenge herself by designing her own dresses for her Behind the Shoulder Pads tour, which kicks off Oct. 11.
"I loved clothes from the time I was 12 or 13 — but I didn’t have any," she recalled. "They didn’t have clothes for teenagers, so I wore drab dresses from Bourne & Hollingsworth [a department store on Oxford Street], but I had very glamorous aunts, about 10 of them. I designed outfits for my aunts. I would draw outfits and say, ‘You know, you must wear pink and black. A black suit with a pink lining and a pink pussycat bow.’"
Collins said she didn't start buying her own clothes until she was in her twenties.
"I went to America. I was 20. The shops! There was [the luxury department store] Bonwit Teller, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue. In LA there was a place called I Magnin and it was heaven. Heaven! And there was a place called Jax," she told the publication. "J. A. X. And that was where everybody went for capri pants. I adored my capri pants. Either blue gingham or pink gingham with a matching shirt. So that’s when I started buying clothes. I black-belted in shopping, I think. Haha!”
She couldn't always afford the luxury goods–which may be why she's not opposed to shopping at the affordable chain. When asked if she wore a lot of designer at the time, she replied: "Schiaparelli and Balmain and Chanel? I could never afford that."
However, that all changed after she was cast in the hit soap, noting she would sometimes be gifted designer goods–most of which she's kept.
"When I was doing Dynasty I would go to Paris sometimes, for Dior. I knew [Gianni] Versace very well," Collins shared. "Versace gifted me with several beautiful things that I still have. A black leather jacket covered in big gold coins. A felt crossover skirt with a huge embroidered dragon on it, which I still have. Several jackets, which I have . . . You know, they say if you have something and you haven’t worn it for a year, get rid of it? I don’t believe in that."
