John Stamos claims he caught his former girlfriend Teri Copley cheating on him with Tony Danza, describing the situation as "physically painful" and "worse than anything."
"I can’t explain it, but I would’ve rather been punched in the nose again or something because the pain is so overwhelming," Stamos, 60, recalled an excerpt of his forthcoming memoir If You Would Have Told Me, first published by People.
According to the Full House alum, the incident occurred at Copley's guesthouse sometime in the 1980s when he was dating the actress and model, now 62.
In the book, Stamos wrote that he simply walked into Copley's guesthouse and found her asleep in bed with someone he didn't immediately recognize, noting the mystery man had "ripped abs."
"Breathless," he went on to say he stumbled out of the room backward.
"At first I was like, ‘I'm going to kick his…’ I didn't know it was [Danza] yet. I see his abs. I'm like, ‘Maybe not. F--- it.’ And I ran,” Stamos shared. “But I remember running down the driveway with tears streaming down my face and I didn't want anyone to see me."
He explained that he identified the man as Danza, now 72, when he was leaving and saw a poster Copley had signed “My Dear Tony" in the front seat of a car parked outside her home that he didn't recognize.
“I jump in the El Co, start the car, and Elton John is still singing, and that’s when it hits me,” Stamos recorded in his memoir per a preview published by Entertainment Weekly. “I mouth the words to his most famous lyrics and realize the name of my rival: ‘Hold me closer, Tony Danza...’”
"It took me a long time to get over that," Stamos told People.
Copley, however, disagrees with her ex's memory of events, suggesting that the two had already broken up. "I wondered, 'What was John doing there?' because we had broken up," she told the outlet. "He just looked at me and shook his head, and walked away."
Parade has reached out for comment.
As for why he decided to rehash the alleged situation now, decades later, Stamos said it's because he wanted to include pieces of his life that the public would find "relatable."
Other experiences Stamos detailed in the memoir include his grief following the death of his beloved co-star Bob Saget and the lessons he learned from it.
"When he died, I knew he loved me. I knew he cared about me. He told me every day," Stamos said. He noted that Saget's way of expressing his love taught him a valuable lesson: "Tomorrow's never promised, so make the best of where you're at, who you're with." The ER alum added, "And by the way, these are all easy things to say. They're hard to do."
