Kate Middleton Appears to Channel Princess Margaret in New Portrait

As an amateur photographer with a love for the art form, Kate Middleton is often the one behind the camera, taking photos of her children, Princess Charlotte and Princes George and Louis, to be shared with the public. But to mark Kate's milestone 40th birthday, Kensington Palace released a trio of new portraits of the Duchess of Cambridge, by the Italian photographer Paolo Roversi.

The images, which were taken late last year in Kew Gardens, are quite glamorous, and feature Kate wearing beautiful Alexander McQueen dresses and jewels inherited from her mother-in-law Princess Diana and borrowed from her grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth. But one of the images in particular is reminiscent of another member of the royal family: Princess Margaret.

The black and white portrait of Kate's profile, in which she wear wearing an off-the-shoulder gown with bow accents, looks quite similar a portrait of the Queen's late sister Margaret, which was taken by Cecil Beaton in honor of the Princess's 19th birthday in 1949.

In that image, Princess Margaret also wears an ethereal, cream-colored off-the-shoulder gown, though Margaret opted for a five-strand pearl choker, while Kate chose to forgo a necklace, instead making a statement with her earrings, which were once worn by Princess Diana.

The portraits of Kate will eventually be added to the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery, but ahead of the Gallery's re-opening in 2023, the images will be part of Coming Home, which is described by Kensington Palace as "a nationwide initiative which sees portraits of well-known individuals being sent to locations which they are closely associated with."

In 2022, Kate's portraits will displayed in Berkshire, St Andrews, and Anglesey, three locations described as having "a special meaning to Her Royal Highness." Further details regarding when and where the images will be displayed will be announced "in due course."
