Kathie Lee Gifford Shares Health Update After Fall That Led to Week-Long Hospital Stay
Kathie Lee Gifford is sharing insight into her recovery following a fall that led to a week-long hospital stay and a fractured pelvis while she was still healing from hip surgery.
The former Today host, who turns 71 in August, revealed that she recently fractured her pelvis during an interview with People published on Tuesday, July 30.
In it, she blamed herself for the injury, telling the publication that the day before, she "moved 300 books by myself" during signings for her new book in Nashville. "I weakened my body. It's my own fault."
As for how she fractured her pelvis in not one but two places–something she described as an "unbelievably painful" experience–Gifford said she was rushing to the door to greet her friend when she tripped and fell.
She was then admitted to the hospital, where it was determined that she had fractured both the front and back of her pelvis. After being hospitalized for a little over a week, she now appears to be on the mend and grateful to be home.
"I'm doing well!" Gifford told ET reporters on Wednesday, just one day after the news broke that she had suffered the severe injury. "I'm happy to be out of the hospital. As lovely as all those people are to me, they really took good care of me, but there's no place like home," she added.
Unfortunately for the media personality and author, she's been away from home for a large chunk of the summer–and it wasn't because she took a relaxing vacation somewhere far, far away.
Earlier this month, Gifford stopped by the morning talk show she used to host to discuss her new book, Herod and Mary, and opened up about her hip replacement surgery that she underwent in June after seeking medical help for frequent and "agonizing pain."
"My doctor finished the surgery, came in to tell me it went beautifully, and then he said, 'Kathie, how have you been existing all this time?'" she told Hoda Kotb. "He said, 'It's one of the worst hips I've ever seen.'"
Here's to hoping her second half of the season turns out better than the first!
