Kellyanne Conway says Christine Blasey Ford is being 'treated like a Fabergé egg,' defends Trump's mockery
Kellyanne Conway was quick to respond to a reporter outside the White House on Wednesday when she was asked whether it was appropriate for President Trump to “openly mock” Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford at a Mississippi rally Tuesday night.
The counselor to the president responded, “I see that’s the lemming-like word you’re all using together, but let’s be fair.”
She went on to argue to the crowd that Ford has been “accommodated by all of us,” referring to Ford’s stirring, televised testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 27. “She’s been treated like a Fabergé egg by all of us, starting with me and the president,” Conway continued as members of the media trailed closely behind.
Conway even took Ford’s attorneys to task, saying it “sounds like” they did not give the Palo Alto University psychology professor the option to testify privately and keep her identity anonymous. “That would have been the more discreet thing for her to do. And they either didn’t tell her that, or she lied under oath,” she said. (It was reported by news outlets including CNN on Sept. 18 that GOP senators had given Ford the option of a closed or open session.)
Conway told reporters that the president has “pointed out factual inconsistencies,” and she openly questioned Ford’s account of the evening she claims Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her decades ago at a party when the two were in high school.
At the Tuesday night rally, Trump imitated Ford’s testimony, saying, “How did you get home? I don’t remember. How did you get there? I don’t remember. Where is the place? I don’t remember. How many years ago was it? I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
“Do you have corroboration for her claims? Excuse me, can you fill in her memory gaps, her factual inconsistencies?” Conway asked reporters outside the White House. “That is part of the evidence-gathering process in any hunt for truth.”
Conway also went after Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, as well as “the Democrats,” who she claims “smoked out [Ford’s] identity. She wanted to remain anonymous.” Conway called this an “unpardonable sin,” but Feinstein has denied leaking her information. In July, Rep. Anna Eshoo, a Palo Alto Democrat who was the first to hear of Ford’s account, said that Ford seemed terrified of making her story public.
Also on Wednesday, Conway appeared on Fox News, echoing many of her sentiments to the White House reporters. “Since the accuser was revealed in the Washington Post, everyone has been incredibly accommodating to her wish to testify, to giving her the space and the deference that she needs to do so,” Conway said to Bill Hemmer and Sandra Smith on the Fox News program “The Headliner.” Conway continued, “She provided her testimony. She still has no corroboration for her testimony. There is still no evidence, not witnesses that have confirmed as far as we know.”
The Fox News hosts then played a clip of Republican Sen. Susan Collins calling Trump’s remarks “just plain wrong.” Another Republican senator, Jeff Flake, called Trump’s taunting “appalling,” and a third, Lisa Murkowski, said it was unacceptable. All three will be integral to the decision of whether or not Kavanaugh is confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.
