How Kim Kardashian has changed since her robbery — 1 year later

It’s been one year since Kim Kardashian was robbed and held at gunpoint in Paris. On Oct. 3, 2016, masked men bound and gagged the reality star in the residence she shared with husband, Kanye West, and stole $10 million worth of jewelry. Only she and a girlfriend were home at the time of the incident.

“While I’m being tied up, I’m like, ‘Are we going to die? Are they gonna kill us?’ And I was just crying and like, ‘Tell them I have babies,'” Kardashian recalled on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Kardashian continued, “I have a split second in my mind to make this quick decision, like, am I gonna run down the stairs, and, like, either be shot in the back? It makes me so upset to think about it, but, like, either they’re gonna shoot me in the back or if I make it and they don’t, if the elevator does not open in time, or the stairs are locked, then, like, I’m f***ed. There’s no way out.”

The E! star admitted she “mentally prepped” herself to be raped before she was dragged into a bathtub as the men fled with her jewelry.

Bye, bye, blingy social media posts: Gone are the days of Kardashian flaunting her wealth and flashy lifestyle. The mother of two (soon to be mother of three) has replaced photos of diamonds with photos of her family and business ventures.

Prior to the robbery, Kardashian was flaunting her jewelry — including a new $4.5 million diamond ring from West — on Instagram and social media. She admitted that probably played a role in the incident.

“I really feel like things happen in your life to teach you things. It was probably no secret, and you see it on the show — I was being flashy, and I was definitely materialistic before,” Kardashian recalled on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “Like I said, everyone gets so excited when they get things. Or, of course when you get engaged, you’re going to show off your ring. If you get a new car — I don’t care what kind it is — you get so proud and you get so happy and you show that off on social media. But it’s just … it’s not worth it. Like, I don’t care about that stuff.”

Now:

Kardashian concluded, “I don’t care to show off the way that I used to. Even though there’s nothing wrong, truly — it’s OK if you’re proud of that and you work so hard and you get something — it’s just not who I am anymore.”

Hello, beefed-up security: The experience was eye-opening for momager Kris Jenner, who responded by significantly increasing the famous family’s security measures.

“It really changed all of our lives and the way that we live,” the matriarch told the Hollywood Reporter. “Not only do we now have an enormous amount of security — everyone is armed and licensed; it’s legit companies that protect all of us — but also the way that we deal with our lives on social media took a huge turn: what we show, what we don’t show. If we go to Disneyland, we’re not snapping pictures with Dumbo; we’ll wait until we leave and then share something we want to share. But it also gave us great pause about what to share.”

Putting her kids first: The Kardashians have always prided themselves on prioritizing family time, but with their brand, businesses, and work commitments their attention is obviously split. Fo Kardashian, she admits that 4-year-old daughter North West and son Saint, 1, are now her primary focus.

“I definitely get a lot more anxiety now, just people knowing your every move,” Kardashian revealed to T Singapore. “My whole world is my kids; it’s all I care about. From literally every last thing that they do, to what they wear, to all their activities. I love being their mom. I definitely don’t hang out with my friends as much just because I have to be with my kids.”

Still, Kardashian won’t share every little thing she does with her family. “It’s funny — so much can go on at home but if you don’t post about it, people think it never happened,” she added. “So they’ll say, ‘She hasn’t posted with her sisters; she must be in a huge fight.’ But it’s not what consumes me anymore, like how it used to.”

Finding a renewed bond with Kanye: Less than two months after Kardashian’s traumatic robbery, the reality star had another crisis on her hands: her husband’s mental state. After a series of erratic behavior during shows, West abruptly canceled the Saint Pablo tour. Days later, he was hospitalized for exhaustion after having a breakdown. Kimye reportedly started 2017 living apart, and there were allegations of marital strife.

“They went through a really rough time there for a while,” a source told People. “It was really touch-and-go. She was dealing with the robbery and all that came after, and she felt like he wasn’t there for her. He was going through his issues around the holidays, and he felt like she wasn’t prioritizing him.”

“[Kim] kept saying, ‘If we can get through this, we’ll be stronger than ever,'” a second insider alleged. “They never fell out of love with each other, but it was just one of those times where marriage is hard work, and you have to push through the pain.”

Perhaps Kardashian’s ordeal changed not only how she handled her behavior on social media but also how she handled her relationship in the spotlight. The couple rarely make official appearances together — unless they are caught by paparazzi heading out to dinner — and have become much more low-key over the last year.

Despite the horror, Kim Kardashian has called the incident life-changing.

“I know this sounds crazy, but I know that was meant to happen to me. I don’t want to start crying, but I feel like that was so meant to happen to me,” Kardashian told Ellen DeGeneres, tearing up. “I’m such a different person. … It was meant to happen to me.”
