What We Know About Sylvester Stallone's Gritty TV Police Drama

Action movie legend Sylvester Stallone’s next project will be a period police drama. The Tenderloin, which Stallone is currently developing through his Balboa Productions for The History Channel, will be based on the true story of New York police officer Charles Becker, according to a report by Deadline.
Set in the early 20th Century, the show will depict the violent conflict between Becker’s “Strong-Arm Squad” and a number of violent New York City gangs. The action will take place against the backdrop of the Tenderloin neighborhood of NYC, which gives the show its name. “Becker and his squad were dirty cops but at the same time tried to impose order in a city controlled by gangs,” states the production’s official logline.
In addition to executive producing The Tenderloin, Stallone will also direct several episodes. The pilot will be written by Stephen Kay, who has previously explored similar themes of police corruption and gang life in The Shield and Sons of Anarchy.
“Long before Miranda Rights or the fictional series The Shield, there was the very real Charles Becker, a police officer living by his own moral code,” said Eli Lehrer, Head of Programming at History, in a statement. “This is a passion project for Slyvester, who has discovered new facts on Becker’s case that shed new light on this infamous antihero. We look forward to joining forces with him to bring this incredible story to History audiences.”
Most famous for his roles in the Rocky and Rambo action franchises, Stallone has enjoyed a career renaissance of late thanks to The Expendables, and the Rocky sequels Creed and Creed II, in which his character mentors the son of his former rival.
Stallone can next be seen in Rambo V: Last Blood on September 20. The long-awaited sequel promises to be a visceral ride, considering the 72-year-old actor’s recent claims that the shoot “did a lot of damage” to his body.
