Kristin Cavallari says sharing custody with ex Jay Cutler has made her a 'better mom': 'When I have them for my week, I am so incredibly present'
Kristin Cavallari says her split from Jay Cutler — which the couple of 10 years announced last April — has helped her be a "better mom" for their three children. Speaking to Hollywood Life, the reality star shared how splitting custody of 8-year-old Camden, 6-year-old Jaxon and 5-year-old Saylor in a "one week on, one week off" arrangement makes her focus on being more present and make the most of their time together.
“I’d say maybe it’s made me a better mom in some ways because I have my kids half of the time now," the 34-year-old shared. "So when I have them for my week, I am so incredibly present."
She added, "I am not distracted by my phone or anything else. I am with them. If someone is having a temper tantrum or something, I remain calm because I know that I am losing them in a few days.”

When the kids are with 37-year-old Cutler, Cavallari uses the time to "really focus on myself or whatever it is so that when I have my kids, I have my kids. That’s it and I’m not doing anything else.”
Cavallari added that she likes to "hit it hard with my kids" when it's her turn. That includes not leaving them with a babysitter.
"I’ve gotten a babysitter one time when I’ve had my kids in the last year and I completely regretted it," she shared. "My girlfriends are like, ‘Let’s go get dinner. Let’s go get drinks,’ and I’m like, ‘I refuse to get a babysitter,’ so you just have to figure out what works for you."
Though she doesn't share her children's faces on social media, Cavallari does document their family adventures, including cooking together, getting makeovers with daughter Saylor and traveling.
