Last year, a homeless man returned a $10K check, this year he's nearly a Realtor planning transitional homes for teens
Just before Thanksgiving last year, Elmer Alvarez, who was homeless at the time, found a lost $10,000 check made out to a New Haven, Conn., realtor, Roberta Hoskie. In an action that Hoskie describes as shattering “a lot of stereotypes … about homeless people,” Alvarez returned the check to her.
Moved by the man’s honesty, Hoskie, who had been homeless at one point in her life as well, decided to pay it forward. “I will never forget, I said never forget how far God has brought me,” Hoskie said.
So, Hoskie offered Alvarez, who had been homeless for a year, an apartment. On top of that, she helped him on his way to becoming a Realtor himself.
A year after returning that lost check to Hoskie, Alvarez is one test away from becoming a licensed Realtor and serves as a member of Hoskie’s company’s Board of Directors.
“I’m waiting for my … date so I can go and take my last and final test,” Alvarez told WTIC.
But Alvarez and Hoskie’s kindness isn’t over. “It is his vision that God gave him when he was in shelters that is helping us shape what we are in the process of putting together right now,” Hoskie said.
Together, the two are planning a transitional home for homeless teens and young adults. They hope to have medical services on site, as well as education, employment opportunities and church services. They also plan to provide young people in need with substance abuse classes.
So far, a two-family home has been purchased for the Outreach Foundation, and their goal is to assist 15 individuals. You can donate to the cause here.
