This Limited-Edition Trader Joe's Fall Freezer Find Might Have Just 'Dethroned' the Iconic Butternut Mac and Cheese

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Palooza returns each year around Labor Day. All the seasonally-inspired treats make it a frontrunner for "Pumpkin Capital of the World" (sorry, Starbucks). The cult-favorite grocery chain also makes a good case for being the go-to spot for all things butternut squash.

Fans anxiously await the return of TJ's Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese every year and the new flaky, buttery Trader Joe's Butternut Squash and Carmelized Onion Tart is also getting rave reviews on Reddit.

The Trader Joe's subreddit is also buzzing about another frozen dinner: Butternut Squash Italian Lasagna. Some say the baked pasta might be better than the iconic mac and cheese. Here's what Redditors are saying about this fan favorite so you can decide for yourself.

"OMG — the Butternut Squash Lasagna — one of the most delicious frozen meals I’ve eaten in ages," started u/punkolina. "It just melts in my mouth. I bought one box to try, and I’m going back ASAP for more. One box is enough for two meals for me. Yummy!"

The made-in-Italy Butternut Squash Lasagna comes in 16-ounce boxes ($4.49), which contain two hearty servings of the pasta in a cozy squash-based sauce. But the squash isn't the only draw here. There's also a creamy béchamel sauce made with smoked Provola cheese and some rosemary, ginger and black pepper to spice up the pasta party. On top, you'll find more cheese, breadcrumbs, pumpkin seeds and chives. The pasta is packed in an oven-safe tray and cooks in 45 minutes at 400°F. If you're short on time, you can microwave it for 4 to 5 minutes.

Reddit swears it's worth whatever waiting time you choose.

"I just had it for the first time tonight—delicious," raved a new fan. "I'm going back to get 12 more tomorrow—I'm only sort of kidding. It was really good."

"I agree— so good, especially in the oven," wrote a proponent of slightly-delayed gratification.

"[I] had it last week [and] agree [that] it is yummy," replied someone else.

"It's so so so so good," raved another. "I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it."

Surprise was a theme in the thread. And, on that note, you might want to sit down for this one.

"That was surprisingly tasty," one Redditor said. "I just got another one. Meanwhile, the Butternut Mac & Cheese was unmemorable by comparison due to not being very butternutty."

Blasphemy?!

Maybe not.

"[I] had it tonight—so much better than the Butternut Mac & Cheese, in my humble opinion," agreed another.

"I skipped out on getting the Butternut Mac & Cheese so I could get two boxes of this, and I’m so glad I did," shared someone else. "It’s really good."

The thread piqued even the staunchest Trader Joe's Butternut Mac & Cheese fans' interest.

"I really need to try this lasagna because I love the Mac & Cheese," wrote a fan.

"As someone who loves butternut squash, now I have to try this," said another.

Life hack: Head out for your haul quickly—others are eager to try the Butternut Squash Lasagna from Trader Joe's and its limited edition.

"I saw this the other day, but now I'm convinced to go try it," dished a fan.

"I almost bought this tonight but was skeptical— I will try next time," said a soon-to-be stan (probably).

And if you follow the Reddit breadcrumbs back a little bit further, you'll find another thread, which makes the mac and cheese vs. lasagna debate even clearer. "Could it be true? New butternut squash lasagna may have just dethroned butternut squash mac and cheese as my fave fall frozen item!" says the OP.

Bold words, indeed! It seems there's only one way to settle this debate. We'll meet you in the TJ's freezer section.
