I was in high school during Tumblr’s peak fashion influence, and it had a major impact on my style. I’m talking skater skirts, infinity scarves, all things American Apparel, and, of course, Dr. Martens’ combat boots. But there’s one piece in particular that’s stood the test of time: flannel shirts. It was my introduction to the button-front style but it quickly became a staple in my wardrobe. While the Tumblr era has come and gone, flannels have remained a part of my fall wardrobe. The design features an oversized fit, button-front closure, and two functional front flap pockets. It covers my butt, which is particularly ideal if I’m wearing leggings, and the soft and flexible fabric is warm and comfortable enough for both cooler mornings and warmer afternoons.
My favorite thing about this flannel shirt is how easy it is to style; the tailored button-down makes it seem like you put in a lot of effort, while the baggy fit gives off a cool and casual vibe. I wear it open over a crop top or tank like a jacket and pair it with my go-to high-waisted mom jeans. For an edgier look, I pair it with a midi-length turtleneck dress and combat boots. But most recently, I’ve been layering the flannel beneath an oversized graphic sweatshirt, allowing for the collar and shirttail to peak out. The possibilities are truly endless.
