Llama and Alpaca Costume Contest at Indiana State Fair Is Simply the Best
You may not have realized how badly you needed to see an alpaca dressed as a coral reef with their mermaid handler until now but you absolutely do. The Indiana State Fair recently had an alpaca and llama costume contest sponsored by the 4H club and it's simply hilarious.

You might think these crazy costumes prove distracting or annoying to these llamas and alpacas, but that's exactly the point. The costumes are used to desensitize these animals, and the description explains for the llamas, the competitions help them adapt to being touched, loud noises and strange places. This prepares many of them for service as therapy animals. It's just one of many competitions that the Indiana 4H hosts at the Indiana State Fair. People are absolutely loving these fancy dressed farm animals (The video has over 1 million views on Instagram!) and @Monarch comments, "Not a banana split with a spoon! Everything!" @Christa adds, "This gave me all the serotonin I needed to start my day. Thank you." It's impossible to pick a favorite!
If you are interested in getting your own llama or alpaca certified as a service animal, contact therapy animal organizations in your area to inquire about their requirements and application process. Make sure your own alpaca or llama has the right temperament for therapy work. Therapy animals need to be calm, well-socialized, and comfortable around a variety of people and environments. Training them to be accustomed to different people, places and noises will help.
This is just adorable! We may need to pay a visit to the Indiana State Fair next year!
