London Martial Arts celebrates two years of "Adopt A Cop" program
Sep. 18—As London Martial Arts marks the second anniversary of the "Adopt A Cop" program, they reflect on the remarkable journey that has not only strengthened local law enforcement but also brought the community closer together.
It's more than just a date on the calendar. It represents two years of dedication, growth, and meaningful relationships that have positively impacted both the police officers and the students within the school.
The initiative of the program was launched with a clear vision: to provide law enforcement officers with the tools needed to protect themselves while protecting the communities they serve. Owner and Head Instructor Jonathan Byerly believed that adding the program for police officers would enhance physical skills, boost confidence and help navigate the challenges they face in the line of duty. During the course of the program Byerly has seen a lot of success from the program with some officers using it as a learning tool only while others use it to compete.
Over the past two years, the program has achieved much more than just equipping officers with self-defense techniques. It has become a bridge between law enforcement and the community, creating a space where officers and civilians interact in a healthy environment. This unique setting has allowed for open dialogue, mutual respect, and the breaking down of barriers that often exist between law enforcement and the public.
The officers who have participated in the program have not only improved their physical capabilities but have also become mentors to the younger students at the school. By training side by side with civilians, these officers have demonstrated their commitment to community engagement and shown that they are not just enforcers of the law, but also protectors and role models.
As London Martial Arts celebrates this second-year milestone, they are more committed than ever to the growth and expansion of the "Adopt a Cop" program. The success that's been seen so far is just the beginning. Moving forward, London Martial Arts will continue to welcome more officers into the program, offer additional training opportunities, and continue to strengthen the bonds between the school, the police department, and the community at large.
"London Martial Arts has given me a family to be a part of," Kentucky State Police Trooper Chelsea Hanson said. "Jonathan Byerly is amazing at teaching all his students but especially his students in law enforcement. He has several students from different agencies. He will take the time to explain why certain techniques would be beneficial in situations that may occur out on patrol. Jonathan Byerly has taught me valuable skills that I truly believe will save my life one day, and for that I am extremely grateful."
