Louisiana cowboy Jamon Turner is teaching kids about agriculture with his Western Play Day
Former professional bull rider Jamon Turner has been giving kids in Shreveport an opportunity to learn about agriculture and now he's taking his Western Play Day on the road.
Restructured as Just Believe's Western Playground, the special clinic allows kids to take part in learning about different trades while playing games and winning prizes.
This special event is more than just a fun weekend on the farm.
"I'm trying to bridge the gap between some of these churches that want to serve, but don't really have a way of reaching inner city communities," Turner explained. "Each one of the churches is going to have a team and their team is going to comprise of the students, the trainers and the coach. So, they're using all of those different avenues to try and accumulate coins."
The weekend event is customizable to your kid's interests. Simply choose one clinic and one trade out of each category. This is for ages 12 - 20.
Trades - Take first-hand look at several in the agricultural field:
Cattle Production
Framing
Farrier
Equine Dentistry
Clinics - what would you like to learn more about:
Horsemanship
Breakaway
Sorting
Fun - make some new friends and get dirty in the Wild West:
Team Challenges
Ranch Games
Prizes
"Each one of these trades is something you can learn and create an LLC yourself. Hardly any of them require any kind of certification and none of them require an actual Vocational College," said Turner. "You're always going to need agriculture. I don't care what happens, you're always going to need to figure out how to take care of the soil."
Originally, this event cost $90 per student for the whole weekend, in order to make it more accessible, Turner covered more of the expenses out of his own pocket to lower it to $45.
"I'm sponsoring half the students already, so if I can find another sponsor that's willing to pay for the tuition for the other half of the students, it'll be free for everybody," Turner explained.
