Malia Obama Is Really Into Shirts as Dresses for Spring
Just because she’s a former first daughter doesn’t mean that her spring style isn’t eminently relatable: Malia Obama is striding into the season with a little shirtdress swagger.
A leg-barring Malia was spotted leaving her internship at The Weinstein Company in New York on Tuesday wearing a thigh-grazing, lumberjack-red, plaid shirtdress. Topped with a basic black bomber jacket, the simple yet daring look was way more city streets than White House — and way on trend. If blazers, sweatshirts, and graphic tees can be turned into minidresses, so too can button-ups… which, on the extremely tall former first daughter, inevitably run super short. And super stylish.
Last week, Malia garnered attention for sporting a similar look out and about in NYC. The teenager, who is taking a gap year before enrolling in her parents’ alma mater, Harvard University, wore a daring denim shirtdress to work on a day in which city temperatures finally warmed into the 80s. Then and now, she kept the look clean, pairing both button-down dresses with classic black Chuck Taylor Converse, a backpack, and nothing more. (Well, except for the iPhone reliably clutched in her right hand — a girl’s gotta keep connected, after all.)
While the casual warm-weather look may be quite a departure from the more staid summer style that both she and sister Sasha sported last year when their father was still in office, it’s only the latest in a line of edgier post-POTUS fashion choices the elder Obama daughter has recently made, including the high-waisted jeans she rocked on her first day of work and the colorful beanies she sported at Sundance.
Also on Tuesday, agents in Malia’s secret service detail reported to the New York Police Department that Jair Nilton Cardosa, 30, was harassing her, CBS reports. Following multiple incidents, including one marriage proposal, Cardosa is now undergoing a a psychiatric evaluation. Law enforcement is still deciding whether or not to file stalking and harassment charges against him.
