Manitowoc County Historical Society brings Mid-Lakes Agricultural Fair, Civil War Remembered and more in September
MANITOWOC – Here’s what’s happening at Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road, in September.
Mid-Lakes Agricultural Fair
Sept. 7 and 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Come one, come all to the Mid-Lakes Agricultural Fair! The event will feature all the things a 19th century and early 20th century agricultural fair would. Presented in partnership with the Mid-Lakes Rustic Iron Club, enjoy threshing demonstrations, implement dealers with the “latest” in farm equipment and technology, and other agriculture-related demonstrations. Fairgoers will also experience contests, preserves, games and more. A listing of ongoing and timed activities can be found online. General admission.
4-H and FFA Sunday
Sept. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Arrive at the McAllister House Welcome Center dressed in your 4-H or FFA uniform, organization jackets, or group T-shirt and receive free admission. Group leaders are also admitted free. You may arrive at any time during day.
Dine Fundraiser: A&W Share Night
Sept. 19, 4-8 p.m.
Indulge in your favorite treat from A&W (4141 Harbor Town Lane), whether it’s cheese curds or a root-beer float, to support the MCHS. 10% of proceeds from orders during the event will be donated to MCHS.

Civil War School Day
Sept. 27, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Discover more about Manitowoc County during the Civil War! Participants learn how the soldiers and citizens of the Union lived during the conflict. Meet Civil War legends, watch cavalry and artillery demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities and tour Pinecrest Village’s museum buildings. This program is open to all public, private and home school students. Reservations are required.
Civil War Remembered
Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Step beyond the history books and the battlefield and onto the home front to connect with the people, stories and ideas that link Manitowoc County to America’s greatest conflict — the American Civil War. General admission.
Create-Connect: Family Blacksmithing
Sept. 27, noon to 3 p.m.
This class will allow a parent/grandparent to work with a child as they learn historic blacksmithing techniques in a historic setting. Everyone will get to make several small, hands-on projects, such as small dinner triangles and hooks, while learning about proper safety in a workshop environment. Advanced registration is required.
Civil War Evening Lantern Tour and Dance
Sept. 27, 6-8 p.m.
Become a part of history for this one-night-only event — one that includes a guided lantern tour of the Civil War encampment and village and a Civil War-era dance. This must-see, after-dark special event is like none other! Experience camp life after dark in a guided lantern tour. Feel like part of the encampment as period-dressed historical interpreters led you by lantern light through the camps. The era and mood are set with a stop at a the Civil War-era dance. Admittance with an evening event ticket only. Advanced registration is required.
More history: ‘To fly, fight and die?’ This World War I flying ace was from Manitowoc and earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Scout Sunday
Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Any youth (18 or younger) Scout (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) who goes to Civil War Remembered in his or her uniform will be given free admission.
