Margot Robbie Channels 1977’s Superstar Barbie at the 2024 Golden Globes

Margot Robbie didn’t expect Barbie to have the awards season run it is having, but she is making most of the moment. The actress appeared on the red carpet of the 2024 Golden Globes, wearing a sequined hot pink Armani dress. She did channel a historic Barbie, 1977’s Superstar Barbie, as she did throughout the film’s press tour. She said in a red carpet interview that she was “actually feeling” like a superstar Barbie herself tonight.
Robbie is personally up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her work in Barbie. The movie itself, which Robbie produced, is up for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy; Best Director, Motion Picture (Greta Gerwig); Best Screenplay, Motion Picture (Gerwig and Noah Baumbach); Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Ryan Gosling); and the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award. It also has three nominations in the Best Original Song, Motion Picture category: “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas; “Dance the Night” by Caroline Ailin, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt; and “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Robbie spoke in an interview with Variety this week about Barbie’s success. Her production company, LuckyChap, which she co-founded in 2014 with filmmaker friends Tom Ackerley (her now-husband) and Josey McNamara, also has Saltburn contending this award season.
With Barbie and Saltburn dominating award season chatter, Robbie spoke openly to Variety about how she really didn’t see this plot twist. “When we finished the press tour, I was like, ‘I guess I’ll throw all the pink out of my wardrobe now,’” she said with a laugh. “But the fact that we’re going to the Golden Globes and all that stuff? I truly did not see that coming. I’m not trying to be modest.”
