Mariska Hargitay Gives Blunt Reason For Naming Cat After Taylor Swift

Mariska Hargitay; Taylor Swift

Mariska Hargitay recently bestowed a Taylor Swift-inspired name onto her new pet kitten—and there's only one reason why she chose to honor the singer with the cute moniker.

Back in November, the Law & Order: SVU star introduced the world to her new feline family member, a cat she named Karma after Swift's hit song of the same name.

While asked about her reasoning for picking out the name, Hargitay, 59, bluntly stated, "I mean, it was only right," in a new conversation with Entertainment Tonight. "It was only fair," she added.

For those who don't know, Hargitay was just returning the favor when she decided to name her cat after Swift, as the "Cruel Summer" songstress famously named one of her own cats after Hargitay's longtime Law & Order character, Olivia Benson.

As a result of Swift's dedication to Hargitay with the name of her cat—in combination with how much the actress enjoyed Swift's Eras Tour last year—Karma was the only name that made sense for the newest addition to Hargitay's family.

"There was no other name that was even an option," she candidly stated, and even Swift herself called the situation a "full circle" moment after Hargitay first announced the news on Instagram in the fall.

"Are you serious?!!!!" Swift commented at the time. "Nothing has ever come more full circle ?? LOVE THIS SO MUCH!! ??."

Swift, 34, is also a cat mom to Meredith Grey, another pet named after one of TV's leading ladies. (Meredith's name comes from Ellen Pompeo's famous Grey's Anatomy character.)

Plus, the Grammy-winner also has a third cat, who also got his name from a fictional character she loves: Benjamin Button. The Ragdoll cat is also the famous feline featured on her TIME Person of the Year cover from 2023.
