Marvel Fans Found Proof of a Popular Theory About Thanos and Loki
After his first appearance as Loki in 2011's Thor, Tom Hiddleston and his character have become popular among fans. The actor has become famous enough to date Taylor Swift, and even among the favorites to assume the role of James Bond after Daniel Craig hangs up the tux. Meanwhile, Loki has appeared in four subsequent Marvel films, having developed from an antagonist to, well, a somewhat likable antagonist.
But, one fan theory suggests that Loki being a villain isn't really his fault at all. According to the theory, when Loki was causing trouble throughout the first Avengers film, he was actually under the influence of the Scepter, which he wielded when it contained the Mind Stone:
After Loki got a glimpse of the tesseract, Thanos somehow learned about it and abducted Loki. Tortured, threatened, put on “drug” of some sort- may be the scepter or some other sort of energy, poisoned Loki’s mind.
I also think that if Loki wasn’t under the influence, he would have stopped when Thor asked him to. The way he hesitated in Avengers, the tear that fell from his eye when he stabbed Thor- all suggests that he still loves his brother and wants to come back. But he can’t. at least before he gets rid of his connection to Thanos. And this connection was NOT limited to their alliance. It was something more close, more physical.
Now, fans have noticed, this theory is seemingly confirmed by Marvel, which wrote on its official website:
Arriving at the Sanctuary through a wormhole caused by the Bifrost, Loki met the Other, ruler of the ancient race of extraterrestrials the Chitauri, and Thanos. Offering the God of Mischief dominion over his brother’s favorite realm Earth, Thanos requested the Tesseract in return. Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth.
This tracks with a quote from Loki, "I remember a shadow. Living in the shade of your greatness. I remember you tossing me into an abyss, I who was and should be king."
And also, one thing I noticed with a quick Google search about the Scepter:
The Scepter, occasionally referred to as Loki's Scepter, was a staff weapon that served as the original containment vessel for the Mind Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones. Gifted by Thanos, the staff was wielded by Loki to lead and command the invasion to Earth. After the Battle of New York, the Scepter was confiscated by S.H.I.E.L.D. for studying until it was stolen by Wolfgang von Strucker's HYDRA cell and taken to the HYDRA Research Base in Sokovia.
All of this essentially vindicates Loki of being kind of an asshole throughout the first phase of Marvel movies. And, it kind of makes his supposed death a lot more depressing. But let's be honest: He'll probably be back in Avengers: Endgame.
