At the opening weekend festivities of Godmothers, a new bookstore in Summerland, California near her Montecito home, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex spoke about how important books have been to her. She thanked the store’s founders, Jennifer Rudulph Walsh and Victoria Jackson, for “not just creating the space, but for holding the space for so many people to feel seen through the pages.”
She called out one area of the two-story shop in particular, pointing people upstairs to the children’s section. “Because my gosh, does it begin young,” she said to the crowd of around 100, “to feel seen and to know that you’re not alone, and that your story is reflected in someone else’s.”
Godmothers has devoted half of its spacious second floor to a thoughtfully curated children’s section, with offerings ranging from board books for the littlest readers to parenting guides for the grown-ups. The space features a floor-to-ceiling chalkboard, baskets full of plush Mon Ami stuffed animals, and small tables with colorful chairs inviting guests to sit and spend time there.
After a pair of panels at Godmothers on Sunday, one with the founders and another with Oprah Winfrey and best-selling author Shaka Senghor, the duchess made a beeline for the door, racing home to make dinner for the two kids she has with Prince Harry, 5-year-old Archie and 3-year-old Lili. The family loves to read together, too. Below are some books Meghan mentioned they have chosen recently.
