Meghann Fahy on her 'White Lotus' fame: 'That kind of attention can be a little anxiety-inducing sometimes'
The Unwind is Yahoo Life's well-being series in which experts, influencers and celebrities share their approaches to wellness and mental health, from self-care rituals to setting healthy boundaries to the mantras that keep them afloat.
Meghann Fahy has been working in Hollywood for 15 years. But even that couldn't prepare the actress for the tidal wave of fame that's followed her turn as Daphne in Season 2 of HBO's The White Lotus.
"That kind of attention can be a little anxiety-inducing sometimes," Fahy tells Yahoo Life. "I just recognize this as being this unique little wave that I'm kind of riding out until it crashes. And then the other one comes along, whenever that happens. So I'm very much a go-with-the-flow kind of person. But I also feel like it's such a special thing being a part of The White Lotus. It's such a rare occurrence."
Famous or not, it can be hard to navigate the world of social media, where unkind and/or unsolicited opinions from strangers tend to be amplified. Fahy doesn't let any online chatter get to her, however.
"It's never great to accidentally read something unkind or whatever. But I will say actually, I do feel like I was always sort of able to look at it and not attach myself to any of it or take it too personally," she notes. "Because at the end of the day, I really don't think anyone else's opinion about you is even personal. You just kind of gotta let that stuff roll off of you." She credits her solid core of family and friends with keeping her grounded. "I feel like I care about what those people think and not what a stranger on the internet thinks, you know?"
While she's proud of the skills she has developed to deal with criticism, the former Bold Type star says it "breaks her heart" for the younger generation that is so "inundated by social media."
"It's a shame that we live in a world where it's so easy for people to be negative or unkind. I think it's a huge, huge problem," she shares. "It's not just famous people. It's everybody. It's just kids in high school and middle school. It's just too accessible. I think it can sometimes be harmful."
Fahy is a proud advocate of attending counseling sessions ("I do a lot of talk therapy") and says she's a "huge walker" who loves to stroll New York City and go out for hikes in Los Angeles. "I do some of my best thinking and processing of life and the world when I'm just walking," she says.
While she's a lover of the outdoors, Fahy struggled severely with her allergies from a young age. "I would just suffer so much from sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose, and it was just miserable," says the actress, who has teamed up with Astepro for their Feel Sexy Fast campaign dedicated to helping allergy sufferers regain control of their lives, and allergies.
"So many of the things that I really want to do are outside, and in order to feel free enough to do the things that I want to do, and live authentically, it's a huge help," she says of the 24-hour, steroid-free allergy spray.
The Massachusetts native will soon be heading to Cape Cod to start filming The Perfect Couple, an adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand's novel of the same name, alongside Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, Deadline reported last week. The Cape is familiar territory for the actress, who grew up going there every summer with her family. But one thing that's a little less familiar? Spending time with her Oscar-winning co-star, Kidman.
"I haven't met her yet, but I know that I'm going to be totally geeking out," Fahy says. "She's incredible."
