Melania Trump's spokeswoman claims 'absurdity abounds' in media coverage of first lady
Melania Trump’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, clapped back after a CNN contributor wrote that Trump “doesn’t understand what it means to be first lady.”
In a CNN op-ed published Monday, Grisham claimed “absurdity abounds” in the media’s coverage of Trump, adding that reporters are more fixated on FLOTUS’s clothes than her achievements.
“The media consistently ignores the first lady’s work on behalf of the people of this country, and children in particular, in favor of more trivial matters,” Grisham wrote.
She made clear that her op-ed was in direct response to a recent op-ed by Kate Andersen Brower, which criticized the first lady for focusing on herself in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
“I hope Melania realizes soon that her own personal challenges are nothing compared to the incredible opportunity she has to make a difference and ‘be best,'” Browers wrote.
.@flotus will continue to demonstrate her commitment to helping kids & advancing the causes she cares about. But there is nothing wrong with staying true to herself along the way. In fact, her strength, individuality & integrity should be celebrated. https://t.co/PiLDcMxfv7

In defending her boss, Grisham took the same approach as the first lady did in her Fox News interview — homing in on what they both consider to be unfair media coverage of the Trump family. Grisham pointed out that, since entering the White House, the first lady has comforted hurricane victims in Texas, spent time with patients at Children’s National hospital in Washington, D.C., and launched her “Be Best” campaign to encourage positivity.
Grisham is “one of the more powerful figures in the ever-evolving Trump White House,” according to the Washington Post, as well as a fierce defender of the first lady.
“The role of first lady brings with it unique opportunities to help people across the country and around the world. This is not lost on Mrs. Trump,” Grisham wrote in her op-ed. “She has and will continue to demonstrate her commitment to helping children and advancing the causes she is passionate about. But there is nothing wrong with staying true to herself along the way.”
